It seemed silly to me. Why would I need a watch to tell me when the sun will rise and set?
But, as a painter, I try everything.
When my watch arrived, I was blown away by the quality. The model I chose is beautiful and looks like a $10,000 watch. It's hefty, elegant, and not inferior in any way.
It seems odd to have a watch with only one hand, but it's perfect once you understand the system. Not only does it show moon positions, which would be great for painting at night, but I can see exactly when the sun comes up and goes down. Why do I need that? I don't - or so I thought.
Yet I go out to do paintings in the afternoon sun, and I always end up running out of light because I start too late and overestimate how much light is left. Also, when traveling, I have to account for much earlier sunsets in some parts of a particular time zone.
Recently I was in Venice and thought I had about two hours of light left, yet I ran out of light in 40 minutes. It was so frustrating. This watch tells me exactly when I will lose light - or, in the morning, get light enough to work - and adjusts to every time zone and city in the world. Turns out it's a super-handy tool I'd never have thought I needed. I've also come to rely on the sunlight features in everyday life.
Being a bit of a gadget geek, I'm also amazed by the engineering of this watch, which is truly innovative and takes advantage of old and new technology. Plus, my model came with three watchbands, one of which is very formal, one semi-casual, and one ideal for painting, since I don't need to worry about getting paint on it.
I didn't think I needed this watch, but it's become a tool almost as important as my easel and brushes. I can now know exactly how much time I have to capture the afternoon light.

Nothing is worse than running out of
light or chasing light. Now you can plan for the
best time to set up your easel. This unique time
keeper will give you the exact timing of the sun
and the moon. At a glance you can see when the
sun will rise and set, and when it will be at the
highest in the sky. You can plan to catch first
inspiration as the rays of dawn break, as well as
knowing how much day-light is left before you
have to pack up your pochade. Catching the
warm morning and afternoon light is no longer
a guessing game.
If by chance you get inspired to create
a nocturne painting in the hues of moonlight,
the watch will tell you how bright the moon
shines and when it rises and sets.
Based on complex astronomical
algorithms the watch calculates the data for the
coming day at midnight. It is pre-programmed
to nearly 600 cities worldwide but can be set by
latitude and longitude if you are way out there
painting. The watch also alerts you to solstices
and equinoxes and automatically adjusts for DST.
It also has alarm options, a back light for night
viewing and a future date calculator. The watch
is made in titanium to 10 ATM water-resistance
specs with a virtually scratch-proof sapphire
crystal. Over time the YES watch will slowly
but surely reconnect your sense of time to
the light captured on your canvas.
